Image to Text (OCR) Online (100% Free & Private)
Free image to text (ocr) that runs in your browser. No sign-up, no install.
Image to Text (OCR)
Real text recognition from a photo, scan or screenshot, with the confidence Tesseract reports. English only.
JPG, PNG, WebP (HEIC only where your browser can decode it) • English text only
What this tool does and who it is for
Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image and this tool reads the text in it with Tesseract OCR, running in your browser. You see a preview, the recognized text, and the confidence Tesseract reports. Copy it or download a .txt file.
English only. The first run loads about 15 MB of OCR engine files from this site and caches them; your image is not uploaded anywhere.
HEIC photos work only in browsers that can decode them, such as Safari. Elsewhere, convert to JPG first.
Official Formula / Technical Standard
Real-World Worked Scenario
Load an image, adjust target dimensions or quality parameters, and download the optimized graphic instantly.
When people use it
Receipts and expense reports
Pull vendor names and totals out of a receipt photo, then check each number against the picture.
Screenshots with text
Copy text from a screenshot of an error message, chat or slide when it cannot be selected.
Scanned pages
Get an editable text draft from a flatbed scan or phone photo of a printed page.
Whiteboard and sign photos
Works on clear printed lettering. Neat block text reads far better than cursive.
Notes for US users
- For tax records, keep the original receipt image. Machine-read numbers must be checked before filing.
- Faded thermal-paper receipts and crumpled paper are the hardest cases; retake the photo flat and in good light.
- Phone photos at a slant or in shadow lose accuracy. Square-on, well lit shots read best.
Limits and what to double-check
- •English only. Other languages and scripts are not supported.
- •Handwriting, curved or stylized text and very low-resolution images read poorly.
- •The confidence value is Tesseract's own estimate for the whole image, not a check that the text is correct. You can edit the text box before copying.
Expert Best Practices & Common Pitfalls
Recommended Best Practices
- •Choose modern WebP format for web graphics to minimize bandwidth while preserving visual fidelity.
- •Check image dimensions on both desktop displays and mobile phone screens.
- •Preserve correct aspect ratios to avoid distorted or stretched visuals.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Uploading sensitive personal identification photos to unverified remote servers.
- •Serving massive camera-resolution images without resizing them to their display dimensions.
- •Over-compressing images to the point of introducing visible compression artifacts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Image to Text (OCR) work?▼
The Image to Text (OCR) runs 100% inside your web browser using modern client-side JavaScript. It performs calculations, conversions, and document processing locally on your device without sending any data to external servers.
Is this image to text (ocr) completely free to use?▼
Yes. This tool is completely free with no usage limits, no subscriptions, and no registration required.
Is my data private when using the Image to Text (OCR)?▼
Yes. Because all operations execute locally on your computer or phone, your inputs, documents, and data never leave your browser.
Is the text really read from my image?▼
Yes. The image is decoded in your browser and passed to Tesseract, which returns the recognized text and an overall confidence. Nothing is made up, and a blank or unreadable picture simply returns little or no text.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?▼
No. Recognition happens on your device. The only download is the OCR engine and English data, about 15 MB, from this site the first time.
Why are some digits wrong?▼
OCR often confuses 1 and 7, 5 and 6, 0 and O, especially on small or blurry print. Compare every number with the image, and keep the original for any financial record.
Can it read my iPhone HEIC photos?▼
Only if your browser can decode HEIC, which is mainly Safari. In Chrome or Firefox, convert the file to JPG first and upload that.
