What this tool does and who it is for

This counter shows how many characters your text contains, with spaces and without, along with word, sentence and paragraph totals. Use it when a field has a hard cap, such as a meta description, a social bio, an SMS, a product title or a form that cuts you off mid-sentence.

The same panel also shows reading and speaking time. The characters-with-spaces figure is the raw length of the string, which is what most web forms and databases measure, so it is the number to compare against a stated limit.

One quirk worth knowing: the count is by UTF-16 code unit. Plain letters, digits and punctuation count as one each, but many emoji count as two, so a line full of emoji will read longer here than it looks.

Official Formula / Technical Standard

Text processing engine based on Unicode standard tokenization and typographic conventions.

Real-World Worked Scenario

Enter or paste your text to perform instant transformations, count characters, and analyze typographic properties.

When people use it

Checking an SMS or text-alert length

A single standard text message holds 160 characters of basic text before it splits. Paste your reminder or promo and see how close you are. Messages with emoji or special characters often split sooner, so keep some slack.

Writing meta titles and descriptions

Search results cut off long snippets. Draft your title and description here, then confirm how they display in a snippet preview. Character counts are a rough guide, because Google truncates by pixel width rather than a fixed count.

Filling in a bio or profile field

LinkedIn headlines, Instagram bios and conference speaker forms all have caps. Paste, trim, then paste back. Doing it here avoids the frustrating moment when a form silently chops the last sentence.

Staying inside an application text box

Job portals and grant forms often allow a set number of characters per answer. Count with spaces, since that is the way most of these boxes measure, and leave a few characters free for line breaks.

Notes for US users

  • Always use the with-spaces figure for web forms and SMS unless the form says otherwise. The no-spaces figure is mainly for style guides and some academic tasks.
  • Pasting from Word or Google Docs brings smart quotes and long dashes. They each count as one character, but some older systems convert them to several, so test on the target form.
  • Line breaks count as characters too. A form that shows 500 characters left may charge two per Enter on some platforms.

Limits and what to double-check

  • •This tool has no built-in presets for platforms. You must know the limit for X, Instagram, Google Ads or your CMS and compare it yourself, because platform limits change.
  • •Emoji and some non-English scripts count by code units, so the number can differ from what a platform shows. Always check against the live field.
  • •Nothing is saved. Reloading the page restores the starter sample text.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Character Counter work?▼

The Character Counter runs 100% inside your web browser using modern client-side JavaScript. It performs calculations, conversions, and document processing locally on your device without sending any data to external servers.

Is this character counter completely free to use?▼

Yes. This tool is completely free with no usage limits, no subscriptions, and no registration required.

Is my data private when using the Character Counter?▼

Yes. Because all operations execute locally on your computer or phone, your inputs, documents, and data never leave your browser.

Does a space count as a character?▼

Yes, in the with-spaces figure. Every space, tab and line break is one character there. The without-spaces figure removes all whitespace, including line breaks, so it will always be lower. For forms, ad copy and SMS, use the with-spaces number.

Why does an emoji show as two characters?▼

JavaScript measures strings in 16-bit units, and many emoji need two of them. Other tools may count one visible symbol as one. If an emoji-heavy caption is near a limit, test it in the actual app, since platforms differ in how they count.

What length should a meta description be?▼

Google does not publish a fixed character rule. Snippets are cut by width, and descriptions around the 150 to 160 character mark are commonly displayed in full on desktop, though Google often rewrites them. Write a clear, useful sentence first and use the count only as a loose guide.

Does the counter treat line breaks as characters?▼

Yes. Each Enter adds one character to the with-spaces count and is removed from the without-spaces count. Windows text can use two characters for a line break in files, but a browser text box normally gives you one. If a platform reports a different number than this page, trust the platform, since it is the one that will actually cut your text off.

Can I count characters per line or per paragraph?▼

Not directly. The tool reports totals for the whole box. To check one paragraph or one line, paste only that part. For poetry or captions where each line has a limit, check lines one at a time. A quick way to do several in a row is to paste each one, note the figure, and clear the box before the next.
