Number to Words & Check Writing Converter
What this tool does and who it is for
Type a number and the page writes it out in words, in lowercase and title case, along with a check-writing version and Roman numerals. A currency toggle switches between dollars, euros, pounds, rupees and a plain format. It is meant for the legal line on a check, invoice amounts in words and contract drafting.
The check version follows the familiar US pattern: whole amount in words, then the cents as a fraction over 100, such as Twelve thousand, three hundred forty-five and 67/100 Dollars. Commas, dollar signs and spaces in your input are stripped before the number is read.
Roman numerals are given for the whole-number part from 1 to 3999.

When people use it
Writing the amount line on a check
Type the figure, choose USD, and copy the check wording. Copy it exactly, and draw a line through any unused space after the fraction, which is a standard way to deter alterations.
Adding amounts in words to invoices and contracts
Many agreements state a sum in both numerals and words. Generate the words, then proofread them against the figure.
Teaching or learning number names
Teachers and students can use it to check spelling of numbers such as forty versus fourty, or to practice reading large figures.
Roman numerals for titles and dates
Handy for outlines, movie-style copyright years, clock faces, chapter headings or a Super Bowl style numbering.
Notes for US users
- The US check format uses and before the cents and writes cents as a fraction of 100. Words are normally written with hyphens between tens and ones, such as forty-five.
- On a check, if the words and the numerals disagree, banks generally treat the written words as controlling. Confirm with your bank, and make sure both agree before signing.
- US usage counts a billion as a thousand million and a trillion as a thousand billion, which matches this tool.
- For a contract or legal document, have the final wording reviewed by the person responsible for it. This tool does not give legal advice.
Limits and what to double-check
- •Decimals are rounded to two places, and a value like 0.996 can round up to a 100/100 fraction. Enter amounts with at most two decimals and read the result closely.
- •The scale list ends at trillions, so numbers beyond that are not handled, and very large values lose precision because JavaScript numbers do.
- •Rupees use the international Western grouping, not lakh and crore. The Plain mode reads decimals as a two-digit number, so 0.45 becomes point forty-five.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Number to Words work?▼
The Number to Words runs 100% inside your web browser using modern client-side JavaScript. It performs calculations, conversions, and document processing locally on your device without sending any data to external servers.
Is this number to words completely free to use?▼
Yes. This tool is completely free with no usage limits, no subscriptions, and no registration required.
Is my data private when using the Number to Words?▼
Yes. Because all operations execute locally on your computer or phone, your inputs, documents, and data never leave your browser.
How do I write cents in words on a check?▼
The usual US method is the dollars in words, then the word and, then the cents as a fraction over 100, followed by Dollars. For example, 250.50 becomes Two hundred fifty and 50/100 Dollars. This page generates exactly that format when USD is selected.
Is it one hundred and five or one hundred five?▼
In American English, the and after hundred is usually dropped for whole numbers: one hundred five. The and is saved for the decimal part, as in check writing. This tool follows that convention, so 105 becomes one hundred five. British English often keeps the and, so match the convention of your audience, and the contract or check you are filling in.
Does the tool handle negative numbers?▼
Yes. A leading minus gives the word negative before the number. Be careful using that in a check or contract, since those documents rarely call for negative amounts. Use the absolute value in those cases. The check version will read as negative followed by the amount, which a bank would not accept as a normal payee amount, so enter a positive figure there.
Why are Roman numerals shown as N/A?▼
Standard Roman numerals cover 1 to 3999. Zero, negatives and anything of 4000 or more fall outside that range, so the tool shows N/A for them. Only the whole-number part is converted, so decimals are ignored for the Roman result.
Can I convert a year like 2026?▼
Yes, it will give two thousand twenty-six and MMXXVI. If you want the spoken form twenty twenty-six, you will need to type that yourself, because the tool treats the input as an ordinary quantity. For calendar dates in formal documents, such as the twenty-second day of October, you will need to write the date out yourself.
