PDF to Text (OCR)
Real optical character recognition on every page, with the confidence Tesseract reports. English only.
English text only. Pages are read at 200 dpi.
What this tool does and who it is for
Upload a scanned PDF and this tool reads every page with Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine that runs inside your browser. Each page is rendered at 200 dpi, recognized, and shown with the confidence Tesseract itself reports. You can copy the text, download a .txt, or download a searchable PDF.
It reads English only. The first run loads about 15 MB of OCR engine and language files from this site, then your browser caches them. Your PDF is never uploaded anywhere.
Speed depends on your device: expect several seconds per page, longer for dense pages. A Stop button keeps whatever pages are already done.
Official Formula / Technical Standard
Real-World Worked Scenario
Select your PDF documents, apply the desired operation, and save the updated file directly to your local storage.
When people use it
Scanned contracts and letters
Turn a scanned agreement into text you can search and paste into a document, then proofread against the original.
Old paper records
Run a stack of scanned statements or forms through and download a searchable PDF so you can find a name or date with Ctrl+F.
Before translating or comparing
Compare, summarize and translate tools need real text. OCR a scan first, then use the .txt output.
Notes for US users
- Check every dollar amount, account number and date against the original. OCR confuses 1 and 7, 5 and 6, 0 and O, especially on faded copies.
- For tax and legal records, keep the original scan. The text is a convenience copy, not the record.
- Letter-size scans at 200 dpi or better work best. Phone photos taken at an angle read worse than flatbed scans.
Limits and what to double-check
- •English only. Other languages and scripts will come out as garbage.
- •Handwriting, heavy stamps, tiny print and low-contrast scans read poorly. The confidence figure is Tesseract's own average, not a guarantee of correctness.
- •The searchable PDF rebuilds each page from a re-rendered JPEG, so it will not match the original file's size or vector quality.
Expert Best Practices & Common Pitfalls
Recommended Best Practices
- •Keep local backup copies of original PDF files before applying irreversible transformations.
- •Check document formatting and page orientations after processing.
- •Ensure source PDFs are not corrupted before combining or splitting.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Uploading confidential tax filings or contracts to unknown third-party cloud servers.
- •Attempting to process password-protected files without first unlocking them.
- •Ignoring file size limits on target email or portal destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the PDF to Text (OCR) work?▼
The PDF to Text (OCR) runs 100% inside your web browser using modern client-side JavaScript. It performs calculations, conversions, and document processing locally on your device without sending any data to external servers.
Is this pdf to text (ocr) completely free to use?▼
Yes. This tool is completely free with no usage limits, no subscriptions, and no registration required.
Is my data private when using the PDF to Text (OCR)?▼
Yes. Because all operations execute locally on your computer or phone, your inputs, documents, and data never leave your browser.
Is the confidence number real?▼
Yes. It is the mean word confidence that Tesseract returns for each page, and the overall figure is the average across pages. It is an estimate by the engine, so 95 percent still means you should proofread.
Is my PDF uploaded?▼
No. Pages are rendered and recognized on your device. The only network traffic is loading the OCR engine and English data files from this website the first time, about 15 MB.
Why is it slow?▼
OCR is heavy math done on your own CPU. A clean page may take a few seconds, a crowded one longer. Close other tabs on older devices, and use Stop if you only need the first pages.
Does it work with Spanish or other languages?▼
Not yet. Only the English model is installed, so it is labeled English only. Text in other languages will be misread.
How does the searchable PDF work?▼
Each page image is placed in a new PDF, and the recognized words are added on top as invisible text at the same position. You can then search and select text, while the page looks like your scan.
