What this tool does and who it is for

Split PDF pulls pages out of a document. You can type the pages you want, like 1-3, 7, 10-12, and get one new PDF, or choose the all-pages option and get every page as its own file in a ZIP. It is the quick fix when you only need part of a large file.

After you load a PDF, the tool reads the page count and checks your ranges against it. Numbers outside the document are ignored, and if nothing valid is left you get a prompt instead of an empty file. Work stays inside your browser.

Ranges are combined into a single output in ascending page order, so typing 5, 2 gives you page 2 then page 5, not the order you typed.

Official Formula / Technical Standard

Client-side PDF document manipulation conforming to ISO 32000 PDF standards.

Real-World Worked Scenario

Select your PDF documents, apply the desired operation, and save the updated file directly to your local storage.

When people use it

Send only the signature page

Pull page 14 out of a 40-page lease or contract and email just that, rather than a document the other party already has.

Break a scan into separate records

Office scanners often produce one long PDF of unrelated paperwork. Splitting every page lets you file each sheet under its own name.

Stay under an upload cap

If a portal rejects a 60-page statement, split it into two or three parts and upload them as separate attachments.

Extract a single chapter or form

Grab pages 3-5 of a long IRS instruction booklet or school handbook for a printout without wasting paper.

Notes for US users

  • Page numbers here are the physical position in the file (1, 2, 3), not the printed page labels. A document with roman-numeral front matter will not line up with the numbers on the paper.
  • When splitting bank or mortgage statements for a lender, keep every page of each statement, including pages that look blank or say 'this page intentionally left blank'. Underwriters often reject files with missing pages.
  • If a filing system wants one form per file, the all-pages ZIP option names each file with the original name plus page-N, which is easier to sort than random names.

Limits and what to double-check

  • •Encrypted or password-locked PDFs may fail to load. The error message says to make sure the file is not encrypted.
  • •Only two modes exist: a custom range into one file, or every page separately. There is no 'split every 5 pages' or split-by-bookmark option.
  • •Splitting does not change quality, but form fields or links that point to pages you removed may stop working.

Expert Best Practices & Common Pitfalls

Recommended Best Practices

  • •Keep local backup copies of original PDF files before applying irreversible transformations.
  • •Check document formatting and page orientations after processing.
  • •Ensure source PDFs are not corrupted before combining or splitting.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • •Uploading confidential tax filings or contracts to unknown third-party cloud servers.
  • •Attempting to process password-protected files without first unlocking them.
  • •Ignoring file size limits on target email or portal destinations.

Features & Security Architecture

  • 100% Client-Side: Zero server uploads ensure complete privacy and data confidentiality
  • Fast Results: Processing happens on your own device, so there is no upload or server queue to wait for
  • No Sign-Up Required: Completely free to use with no daily usage caps or account requirements
  • Works on All Devices: Fully responsive across desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Split PDF work?▼

The Split PDF runs 100% inside your web browser using modern client-side JavaScript. It performs calculations, conversions, and document processing locally on your device without sending any data to external servers.

Is this split pdf completely free to use?▼

Yes. This tool is completely free with no usage limits, no subscriptions, and no registration required.

Is my data private when using the Split PDF?▼

Yes. Because all operations execute locally on your computer or phone, your inputs, documents, and data never leave your browser.

What format do I use for the page range?▼

Use plain numbers and hyphens separated by commas, for example 1-3, 6, 9-10. Spaces are fine. Reversed ranges like 5-2 are treated as 2-5. Anything beyond the last page is skipped, so if the PDF has 8 pages, 7-20 returns pages 7 and 8.

Can I get several separate files from one range entry?▼

Not in range mode. All the pages you list go into one new PDF. If you want separate files, run the tool more than once with different ranges, or switch to the all-pages mode and take the individual files from the ZIP.

Does the original file change?▼

No. The tool reads your file and builds a new one for download. The original on your computer is left alone, so you can always go back to it if you picked the wrong pages.

Why did I get an error loading my PDF?▼

The most common cause is encryption. Files protected with a password or certain restrictions can fail to open in the browser library. Remove the protection in the app that created the file, or print it to a fresh PDF, and try again.

Will the split pages keep their text and images?▼

Yes. Pages are copied across, not flattened into pictures, so selectable text stays selectable. Fonts and images used on the kept pages come with them, which can make a single-page file bigger than you would expect.
